Congratulations to December's Volunteer of the Month, Noora Haddara!
Noora was nominated by fellow volunteers as a wonderful contributer to our team, and we would like to recognize her here.
You have been such an essential part of our SLDP team Noora, and we really appreciate all of the hard work you have put into the program!
Keep up the great work!
Hello everyone!
My name is Julia and I am so excited to be working on SLDP this year. More specially, I am one of the four student leadership assistants in-charge of organizing the SLDP program so that people like you can take advantage of engaging and productive leadership sessions on campus.
This is my first year being involved with Student Community & Leadership Development, and it has been a wonderful experience thus far. In fact I can now say with conviction that getting involved on campus outside of your studies is a great way to have an all around fuller University experience.
Leadership is one of those things that kind of fell onto my plate, many years ago. Growing up my teachers always commented on my interest in taking charge and being a leader, so I suppose its presence has always been there. But it wasn't until recently that I really started thinking to myself, maybe I am supposed to do something pertaining to leadership? It seemed so clear in hindsight.
So this is where I am now. I am a third year Theatre Studies major and I am also pursuing a minor in Dance. I have been living in residence since first year and am involved with res-life as a porter. SC&LD has become like a second home, and SLDP like our child. (Enough acronyms yet?) I hope you take the time to attend one of the sessions, and that your University experience benefits from them. We all have the potential to be leaders, but only some will be great. Maybe one will be you?
I’m a first-year student at York University hoping to complete a Biology major, Chemistry minor and later an Education degree – all in five years. Now you might think that that is a little bit too much for a first-year to take on, but I aspire to become a high school science teacher (or get a masters), depending on whichever one comes first, and I'm motivated! I also volunteer at my local high school to help students in science and get experience in the classroom, yet in September I was still wondering how I could get involved at York. With a little detective work, I found SLDP. Now to be honest, I was a little unsure of what I was getting myself into when joining SLDP this year. Was it a club? Did it require a strict schedule? I just didn’t know what to expect. But when I attended the very first meeting, where we got to break the ice, have fun, and learn about the program at the same time, I felt very much at home.
See, the volunteers at SLDP are every-day students like you and me. They seem to either want to help out at their university, do some networking or just get a break from studying. Whatever the reason, SLDP really seems to be something that can work for everyone and it’s definitely different than other extra-curricular activities I’ve done before. Now, I know you must be thinking, “What exactly is SLDP?” Well, to answer that question, you’re going to have come check it out for yourselves. SLDP offers something that is different for everybody – we hold conferences, workshops, trips, and that’s just the beginning. So take a leap, because we’re all standing on the same edge. We all have responsibilities, stresses and pressures in life, and I find that the first step, especially in becoming a leader, is to try new things – to be willing to face the uncertainty of the unknown. And you have already kinda done that! You got into university, didn’t you? It takes a determined person to make it that far, and with SLDP, you will go even further. Come join us!

Hello, it's Afroza here! I'm one of the volunteers for Student Leadership Development Programs (SLDP). It is my pleasure to help you experience York U beyond the classroom- but in case you are concerned about how to improve your situation in the class, I can help with that too!
I'm a third year Sociology student, but I am also in the Facutly of Education's concurrent program. In the Faculty of Ed, I am in the I/S (High School) division, with my teachables being Social Sciences and History. I'm currently heavily involved with the Student Community & Leadership Development (SCLD) volunteering for York is U, SLDP, York Lions in Training (Y-LiT), and RED Zone. I also represent and volunteer for my home faculty, the Facutly of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. As you can tell, I am passionate about York, and strive to be a source of information and aid for you.
If you have any questions or concerns, I'm more than happy to help!
You made it! You are here.
You have already accomplished your first step. Well done!
Now, the world of SLDP is a friendly and manageable one, but sometimes getting started can feel slightly overwhelming. Thats okay!
We are here to help:)
The sessions we offer can be found on the main page of this blog in the column on the left hand side, and you can also find them on the york website here. Check those out so that you can get an idea of what kind of session you are interested in; whether it be a session from our Core Program, the Learning Skills stream, or the Career Exploration Stream.
By clicking on the area which you are interested in, you will be linked to more information regarding each specific area.
When you are redirected to the York website, you will also see the dates which that particular session is being held. Select all of the sessions which you are interested in, and click 'sign up.' A pop up window will appear asking you for some more specific information, and then you're done!
The sessions locations will be noted, as well as the time when they are being held. Don't forget to take advantage of the 'Add to my Calender' and 'Remind me by Email' options.
And that's it! We recommend you show up to the session at least 10 minutes early so that you can sign in.
We hope to see you at an upcoming session!
