Hi, I'm Erica!

I’m a first-year student at York University hoping to complete a Biology major, Chemistry minor and later an Education degree – all in five years. Now you might think that that is a little bit too much for a first-year to take on, but I aspire to become a high school science teacher (or get a masters), depending on whichever one comes first, and I'm motivated! I also volunteer at my local high school to help students in science and get experience in the classroom, yet in September I was still wondering how I could get involved at York. With a little detective work, I found SLDP. Now to be honest, I was a little unsure of what I was getting myself into when joining SLDP this year. Was it a club? Did it require a strict schedule? I just didn’t know what to expect. But when I attended the very first meeting, where we got to break the ice, have fun, and learn about the program at the same time, I felt very much at home.

See, the volunteers at SLDP are every-day students like you and me. They seem to either want to help out at their university, do some networking or just get a break from studying. Whatever the reason, SLDP really seems to be something that can work for everyone and it’s definitely different than other extra-curricular activities I’ve done before. Now, I know you must be thinking, “What exactly is SLDP?” Well, to answer that question, you’re going to have come check it out for yourselves. SLDP offers something that is different for everybody – we hold conferences, workshops, trips, and that’s just the beginning. So take a leap, because we’re all standing on the same edge. We all have responsibilities, stresses and pressures in life, and I find that the first step, especially in becoming a leader, is to try new things – to be willing to face the uncertainty of the unknown. And you have already kinda done that! You got into university, didn’t you? It takes a determined person to make it that far, and with SLDP, you will go even further. Come join us!
